Using fashion to improve your dating life is in no way, shape, or form solely the domain of women.
Most women may be naturals at it, whereas most men have to struggle long and hard to get a sense of it, but make no mistake – to land a woman who looks good, you have to look good too. And you can't expect some beautiful girl to swoop in and save you from your slovenly self. You need to take the initiative yourself. Show the women you're interested in that you care enough about looking good for yourself and for them, and they'll reward you for it. Guaranteed.
The following are some brief dating tips and advice as it relates to fashion for men.
The Right Clothes for the Right Body
First of all, dress appropriately for your body and personality. Your wardrobe is supposed to highlight your greatest attributes, not transform you into somebody you're not. (We all see how well that turns out every year in the latest batch of formula romantic comedies Hollywood doles out).
In fact, keeping with the movie motif for a moment, in the film "The Weatherman", Nicholas Cage's overweight teenage daughter looks frightening in the tight, form fitting outfits she wears because all the other girls are wearing them too. But when he gently encourages to dress more appropriately for her body type, she steps out in billowy skirts and sundresses that make her look vibrant and vivacious.
Most men are the same way, dressing like they think they're supposed to dress, or dressing the way all the other guys they know do. This is a recipe for failure with women, and it even has a name; it's called being a "fashion victim". But women don't want a clone of the latest male fashion fad or trend (or glaring lack thereof). And they certainly don't want a man who looks out of place in the clothes he's wearing.
So first things first, take a good, long, honest appraisal of your body in the mirror. And adjust your thinking to start seeking out clothing that compliments your body type, not tries to change or disguise it.
Big men:
- avoid tight-fitting clothes
- avoid tops with sloping shoulders
- avoid horizontal and diagonal stripes
- stick with single, solid colors
- avoid turtle-necks, busy printed shirts, and clothes made of materials that add girth (like wool)
- wear jackets that fit nicely around your waist and hang down several inches below it, and stay away from double-vents in the back
- wear "short-rise" or "low-rise" pants, meaning they have less of a distance between crotch and waistband than the average pants, and then be sure to wear them around your hips
- make sure your pants fit well, even if it means taking them to a tailor, avoiding both baggy and tight slacks
- use a belt
- empty all the extra weight from your pockets
Skinny men:
- wear fitted shirts (this is appropriate for tall men too), but make sure the whole shirt fits your torso and not just the waistline
- remove any extra sagging or bagginess from your jackets (such as under the arms)
- eschew single, solid colors from top to bottom in favor of some variety across the color spectrum, gravitating particularly to lighter tones
- stay out of vertical stripes
- keep your feet out of shoes with round toes
- tight jeans, no; jeans with volume-adding characteristics (like pleats, lines, patterns cuffs)
Short men:
- form a relationship with a good tailor as everything you wear needs to fit perfectly – too big and baggy and too tight and form-fitting are equally bad
- wear the same single, solid color top and bottom
- tend towards darker shades and tones
- lean towards lighter and flimsier fabrics
- stay away from big, gaudy prints
- seek out vertical stripes and V-necks
- wear shoes with square toes
- stick to the 3-or-less button rule with jackets
- don't tuck in baggy shirts (better yet, don't even wear them)
- choose a shoe with a decent sized heel
- if you wear a tie, wear thinner ones
- pick "low-rise" pants, meaning that the distance between the crotch and waistband is shorter than that of the average pair of pants
The Bare Necessities
Now that you know how to pick the appropriate wardrobe elements for your specific body, take a look now at the fundamental wardrobe items that every man should own at least one of:
- sport coat
- suit
- black dress shirt
- white dress shirt
- plain white T-shirt
- polo shirt
- sweater
- black socks
- brown dress shoes
- black dress shoes
- jeans
- belt
- overcoat
- scarf
Mixing and Matching: The Alchemy of an Attractive Outfit
Coordination isn't only useful on the dance floor. It's also an essential element of creating a stylish and attractive ensemble. Every item you add to your wardrobe should serve multiple purposes, meaning that it should be able to form, in combination with other elements in your wardrobe, several different outfits. A successful and attractive man shops for clothing with the big picture in mind, each item he considers not on an individual basis, on it's own merit alone, but as it augments his overall look.
Completing the Picture
Women know how to accessorize. They know that shirt, pants, and shoes do not a complete outfit make. Which means they can quickly and easily recognize when a man stands out as an exception to his genders' rule and accentuates his wardrobe fashionably with the right combination of accessories. Most men are horrible at this. Which means that excelling at it can give you an advantage over the competition.
The essential accessories for fashionable men are:
- shades/sunglasses
- wallet
- watch
- gloves
- aftershave
- cologne
- umbrella
Incidentally, accessorizing is especially useful to shorter men, who can draw attention away from their stature and towards their faces with accoutrements like hats, necklaces, ties, etc.
Now That You've Got It, Keep It
Obtaining the right wardrobe elements for you, and acquiring the fashion sense to coordinate and wear them with style is only the first part of dressing right for dating success. The second part is maintaining that wardrobe you've created, an ongoing process that requires regular attention.
That means keeping your clothes clean and properly laundered (all fabrics are not built alike – read the care and cleaning labels!), even if it means taking them in to be professionally cleaned. Clothes that needs to be pressed should be pressed before donning.
Trade out faded, stained, torn, or poor-fitting clothes as needed, adjusting your wardrobe on a regular basis to suit your new and ever-changing needs.
Find the clothes that make the man you already are, and before long you'll be wearing that equally complementary woman on your arm.
